The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that 67.8 percent of households across nine Nigerian states primarily rely on firewood for cooking.
The report, titled “The 2024 Nigeria Residential Energy Demand-Side Survey (NREDSS),” released yesterday, highlights that while some households have switched to cooking gas, about 41 percent still buy fuel wood, with 39 percent obtaining it through cutting or collection, and 18.9 percent through methods like barter, gifts, or borrowing. Most of this firewood—55.3 percent—is sourced from branches, stems, and trees.
The survey also revealed that 22 percent of households use charcoal, with 21.6 percent purchasing it and only a small fraction producing it themselves. About one in five households (19.4 percent) reported using Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), with an average monthly expenditure on LPG at N10,239.7.
The survey was conducted in Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Ekiti, Oyo, Enugu, Kwara, Plateau, Kano, and Sokoto states.
