Veteran politician and elder statesman, Chief Ralph Obioha, has stated that Nigeria is “suffering and bleeding” at 65. In a recent interview, Obioha, a former chieftain of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), spoke on the state of the nation, expressing the view that the majority of Nigerians would agree that things are not going well.
Key Issues Facing the Nation
Obioha’s comments addressed several critical areas of concern. He noted that the standard of living for most Nigerians has drastically dropped. He emphasized the severe security challenges across the country, stating that the situation is so bad that people cannot guarantee their safety when traveling.
He also raised concerns about political activities, arguing that the focus on the 2027 elections so early is creating “bad blood” and divisions among citizens.
A Call to Action and a Glimmer of Hope
Despite his strong criticisms, Obioha offered a path forward. He called on the government to take immediate action to reduce the suffering of Nigerians, specifically by addressing security issues. He also highlighted the resilience of the Nigerian people, particularly the Igbo, as a positive quality the nation should leverage.
He concluded with a personal call to President Bola Tinubu to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. Obioha believes this action would be a key step in “starting the process of healing for all the injuries that have been caused in this country.”
