Passenger battery fire forces emergency diversion of Air China flight

Date:

A recent Air China flight was forced to make an emergency diversion and landing after a lithium battery, carried by a passenger, spontaneously caught fire inside the cabin.

The Incident Details:

  • Flight: Air China flight CA139, a daily commercial passenger service traveling from Hangzhou, China, to Incheon International Airport near Seoul, South Korea.
  • Cause of Fire: The airline confirmed in a statement that a lithium battery (often a portable power bank) stowed in a passenger’s carry-on luggage, which was stored in an overhead bin, suddenly ignited.
  • Diversion: The crew immediately handled the situation according to protocol, and the plane was diverted to Shanghai Pudong International Airport for an unscheduled, safe landing to ensure the safety of everyone on board.
  • Aftermath: Images circulated by state-affiliated media showed bright flames coming from an overhead storage compartment and black smoke filling the cabin. Crucially, the airline confirmed that no one was injured in the incident.

The event underscores the persistent safety risks associated with lithium-ion batteries in air travel, which are highly regulated due to their propensity for thermal runaway and fire, especially when transported in checked luggage or when faulty. The prompt action of the crew ensured the situation was contained and the flight landed safely.
