Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has spoken out against class slurs directed at his supporters. In a statement on his X.com (formerly Twitter) account, Obi addressed comments that described some of his followers as “street urchins” and “low-class Nigerians.”
Obi emphasized that his politics are founded on empathy, inclusion, and respect for human dignity. He stated that such derogatory remarks reflect a disdain for ordinary citizens and that he would never look down on any Nigerian. He added that his political philosophy is about standing with ordinary Nigerians whose voices have been silenced, not associating with the “high and mighty.”
He stressed that “No Nigerian is of no value. No Nigerian is a street urchin,” and that it is unfortunate that citizens are now looking down on their fellow citizens in such a degrading manner. Obi reiterated his commitment to policies that prioritize education, healthcare, and poverty reduction, noting that true leadership is about lifting people up, not mocking them.
