Manchester United have been rocked by the shock decision of highly rated academy prospect JJ Gabriel.
The 15-year-old, widely regarded as one of the brightest talents in United’s youth system, has formally notified the club that he wants his registration cancelled with immediate effect.
Gabriel, nicknamed “Kid Messi”, has been at Manchester United since the age of 11 and has rapidly risen through the club’s academy ranks. His development has attracted considerable attention after a prolific campaign at youth level and impressive displays for the Under-19 side.
The teenager recently scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut, becoming the youngest Manchester United player to achieve the feat in the competition. He was also named the club’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year last season.
United had been preparing to fast-track Gabriel into the first team and were reportedly considering including him in the squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Brighton. An appearance would potentially have made him the club’s youngest-ever first-team player.
However, his request has now thrown those plans into doubt.
Reports indicate that United are not prepared to simply release Gabriel and remain hopeful of resolving the situation with the youngster and his family. The club reportedly believes there is still time to repair the relationship and convince him to remain at Old Trafford.
Gabriel is currently unable to sign a professional contract because of his age and will not turn 16 until October 6. His current arrangement with United is understood to run until the end of the season, meaning the club can challenge his request to leave.
The exact reasons behind Gabriel’s decision have not been fully disclosed, although reports have pointed to concerns surrounding his development and opportunities during pre-season. He reportedly made only a brief substitute appearance during United’s pre-season campaign despite expectations that he would be given a greater role.
