Tiwa Savage reveals initial doubts about ‘Dorobucci’

Date:

In a recent interview, Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage revealed that she initially had strong doubts about the Mavin Records hit song “Dorobucci.”1

She recalled first hearing the track when Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy was repeatedly playing it in a hotel room in Dubai during her wedding trip. Savage admitted she privately thought the song was “crap,” unaware that she would later be featured on it.2 She also shared that she felt the same way about her hit song “Eminado” when she first heard it.3

When she returned to Nigeria and heard the completed version of “Dorobucci” in the studio, she was shocked. She was the last of the Mavin collective to record her verse for the song because she wasn’t convinced of its potential.4

Despite her initial skepticism, “Dorobucci,” which was released on May 1, 2014, became a massive success and a foundational record for the Mavin label.5 It featured Don Jazzy, Tiwa Savage, Dr SID, D’Prince, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, and Di’Ja.6 The word “Doro” became a popular prefix in Nigerian slang for anything considered significant or extraordinary.
