Nigerians to Pay for New National ID Cards, Sparking Public Debate

Date:

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced a new policy requiring citizens to pay for newly issued national identity cards. This decision has drawn significant public criticism, with many questioning its timing amidst ongoing economic challenges.

The NIMC justified the move as part of efforts to streamline the national identity system and sustain its operations. However, critics argue it will disproportionately affect low-income earners, many of whom already face difficulty accessing basic services.

The policy has also reignited broader conversations about government accountability and the accessibility of public services, particularly as millions of Nigerians are yet to obtain their national identification numbers (NIN).

This development adds to the growing tension over public policies seen as financially burdensome to ordinary citizens, raising questions about affordability and inclusiveness in governance.
