Alleged age falsification: Absence of five ex-police officers stalls arraignment

Date:

The scheduled arraignment of five former police officers on charges of alleged age falsification was stalled due to their absence in court. The officers were expected to face a 14-count criminal charge related to forgery and fraud.

According to a report by BusinessDay, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, had formally filed the charges against the retired senior officers before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The charges allege that the defendants conspired to forge official records to alter their ages and service information, allowing them to remain in service beyond the legally mandated retirement age.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts by Nigerian authorities to combat corruption and fraud within the civil service. Similar cases of age falsification have been prosecuted by agencies like the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) against public officials, including judges and other high-ranking civil servants.

The charges against the ex-police officers, as outlined in the court documents, reportedly include allegations that they manipulated their birth records to secure favorable judgments in various lawsuits at the National Industrial Court. This legal maneuver allegedly allowed them to challenge forced retirements and secure benefits they were no longer entitled to.

The arraignment was adjourned to a later date to allow for the appearance of the defendants. The outcome of this case is expected to set a precedent and send a strong message about the consequences of age falsification and forgery in the Nigerian public service.
