‘Jesus, Jesus!’ — Somtochukwu Maduagwu’s final cry

Date:

On the night of September 30, 2025, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old news anchor, reporter, and producer for ARISE News, died after a tragic incident at her residence in the Katampe district of Abuja.

According to reports, at around 3:00 a.m., an armed gang of between 14 and 15 men forced their way into her residential estate.1 As the robbers approached her apartment on the third floor, she was heard screaming “Jesus, Jesus!” Neighbors and construction workers heard her final cries.2 The robbers reportedly pleaded with her not to jump, but she leaped from her balcony and landed on the concrete below.3

Maduagwu did not die instantly.4 She was reportedly taken to Maitama General Hospital, but accounts differ on the circumstances of her death after the fall.5 Some of her colleagues and a family friend allege that she and an injured security guard were denied prompt treatment at the hospital because staff demanded identification documents.6 The FCT Police Commissioner, however, disputes these claims, stating that police officers rushed her to the hospital where doctors attempted CPR, but she was already unconscious and showed no vital signs upon arrival.7

The incident has sparked a national conversation about security challenges and the response of authorities.8 A neighbor stated that the Katampe area has been under siege by robbers for several years.9 The FCT Police and the Department of State Services (DSS) have launched an investigation into the robbery and the circumstances of her death.10

Somtochukwu Maduagwu, who was also a lawyer and a former beauty queen, had been with Arise News for exactly one year.11 She was known to her colleagues as a dedicated professional and was described by her father as a lively person with a passion for her country, having returned to Nigeria after studying law in the UK.12
